This is my first setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis which was written in 2015 for the upper voice choir, Aurora Nova. The premiere took place in St Paul’s Cathedral in August 2015, conducted by Patrick Craig.
Although the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis are related in terms of material, they inhabit totally different worlds. When I wrote the Magnificat, like Mary, I was also expecting my first child. I wanted the music to strongly reflect the sense of awe and praise that she would have felt during this time.
In contrast, the Nunc Dimittis aims to portray the words of Simeon, an old man, waiting patiently to leave this world. The music for the Gloria, despite being linked at the outset to the Gloria of the Magnificat, takes a different direction to give a sense of closure as Simeon dies.
